Michael Moore, Hector of Troy and Adolf Hitler were all present last night at the French House.
They were just a few of the trivia answers in the first Honors College Quiz Bowl, a program put on by the freshman representatives of the Honors College Student Council.
Council President Trey Smith, political science senior, said each class’s representatives were instructed last semester to create their own programs.
“We put [programs] under the control of each class of representatives,” he said. “The freshmen came up with either a quiz bowl or a talent show, and I thought a quiz bowl would have a better turnout. They’ve been working on it since beginning of semester, compiling questions and coming up with formats.”
Fifteen four-member teams entered the competition. Members of the winning team received $15 Raising Cane’s gift certificates, purchased with the $4 per team entry fee.
The tournament consisted of a bracket with five preliminary rounds of three teams each. The teams faced a first round of basic questions and a second round with toss-up questions. The team answering the toss-up correctly was given the chance to answer two bonus questions.
The winning team in each round and the highest non-winning score of all the rounds met in semifinals. The semifinal winners faced a faculty team in the final round.
Question categories included astronomy, British literature and mathematics, among others.
Sanjay Juneja, premedical freshman, said he entered as a representative of a championship quiz bowl team from Baton Rouge High School.
“We’ve had a blast,” Juneja said before his team was eliminated in the semifinals.
Leslie Smith, freshman representative on the Honors College Student Council, helped organize the event.
She said the event’s turnout was a welcomed surprise.
“We were very much pleased,” she said. “We didn’t know what to expect because a lot of the Honors College events don’t render [much] response. But everyone’s showing up. Hopefully the way it’s working, we’ll have it again next year.”
