The results of the February 2006 bar exam rank the LSU Law Center’s passing rate first for in-state law schools.
Of the 33 applicants who applied from LSU, 69.7 percent received passing scores, just ahead of Tulane law school, which boasted 66.7 percent of its 15 applicants passing, according to a report by the Louisiana Supreme Court.
Applicants from Loyola University and Southern University fell short of LSU, but had a larger number of students taking the bar exam. Loyola had 47 students and SU had 85 students who took the exam.
“We’re always happy that our students performed better than students in other local law schools,” said Cheney Joseph, vice chancellor of LSU Law Center.
The results of the July test may show a more accurate comparison for each law school’s success rate because it had higher participation.
Joseph said more students take the July bar exam because a larger number of students graduate in May.
Students often take the February bar exam if they decide to practice out of the state, in which case they take their first bar exams in the state they will be practicing in before they return to take the Louisiana bar. Also, students who graduate in August or December, or students who did not pass the July bar exam often take it in February, Joseph said.
