University administrator Saundra McGuire recently received the Presidential Award for Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.
McGuire, director of the Center for Academic Success, attended an award ceremony Friday in Washington, D.C. in the White House, where she met with President Bush.
“Talking with the president in the Oval Office was an experience that I will never forget,” McGuire said in a University news release.
The chemical engineering adjunct professor was one of ten to win the award.
“I was both humbled and honored to receive this award, and I accepted it on behalf of all the wonderful mentors I’ve had throughout my life, the many colleagues with whom I’ve worked and the thousands of students I’ve mentored and from whom I’ve learned so much,” McGuire said in a news release.
The annual award, which is administered by the National Science Foundation comes with a $10,000 grant.
“I will use the cash award to expand the mentoring activities at LSU so that many more students will experience success,” she said in the news release.
The program awards people or programs who spread science, mathematics and engineering education to students not equally represented in those fields.
“This prestigious recognition of Saundra McGuire’s contributions to LSU and to her profession is a fitting reward for an excellent teacher, scientist and mentor who is dedicated to the well-being and success of her students,” Chancellor Sean O’Keefe said in the news release.
