On-campus residents can take a break from their studies, get in the Halloween mood and take a drive to a 1950s styled movie screening. The Residence Hall Association is hosting its first drive-in movie tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Hart lot next to Kirby-Smith Hall. “We’re inviting on-campus residents to drive their cars over to the lot,” said Amy Vitrano, RHA central campus director. “We have it blocked off so they can pull right up and roll their windows down. We’re going to have the movie playing on a big screen with speakers surrounding the area so they can hear. We’re also going to be serving popcorn and drinks to them free of charge.” The drive-in movie will show director Tim Burton’s 1999 horror movie, “Sleepy Hollow,” starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci. “We were trying to work with Halloween,” said William Monson, RHA president. “We wanted to show something along the lines of a Halloween-type movie. ‘Sleepy Hollow’ was the best choice overall.” The drive-in will also feature a Change for Charity drive sponsored by the National Residence Hall Honorary. Students will be able to donate loose change from their cars to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. “People are driving their cars over, and they’ll have spare change. So we’re going to collect it and donate it to Mothers Against Drunk Driving,” said Kathy Smith, RHA policy director. “We wanted to tie it into the drive-in aspect.” Monson said the drive-in provides a good opportunity for on-campus residents to meet new people. “It’s a good opportunity for residents in the halls to knock on their buddy’s door, or even a neighbor they don’t know too well, and be like ‘Hey, you want to go see this movie,'” Monson said. Vitrano said there is space for nearly 200 cars, and she expects 150 residents to attend. She said students should bring their school IDs.
