In-state opponent Charlotte will come to Raleigh for a doubleheader today at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex against an N.C. State team that swept ACC foe Boston College this weekend, when it outscored the Eagles 19-4 over the three games.
Senior third baseman Jen Chamberlin, who is now the all-time home run leader in the ACC with 47 homers, said she was pleased with how the team played despite frigid conditions.
“The cold did not hurt my bat too much,” Chamberlin said. “I’m excited that now I can just keep moving on and keep focusing on getting better. After I hit the first one [to tie the record], they announced it, and when I hit the second one, I just got really excited.”
After winning all three games this weekend, the Wolfpack has moved into third place in the ACC with a 7-5 conference record. Chamberlin said she and her teammates have used past mistakes and losses to propel themselves into this position.
“We all saw how we felt after the tough loss at Virginia Tech. We just weren’t happy with the result, and we just wanted to not have to feel like that,” Chamberlin said. “You could tell on everyone’s faces that we were going to do great things this past weekend.”
Although State, as a perennial ACC contender, often has more talent that the 49ers, the overall series is tied 2-2. Chamberlin credited this to State’s elevated status as a superior team.
“That’s something we always have to contend with. A lot of these North Carolina schools may not have the talent we do. They come out to play extremely hard because they want to beat the best team in the state,” Chamberlin said. “It’s a challenge, but we have to believe that we are going to win.”
Chamberlin said the Pack should win both games today, and she added the results of this weekend were more than just spurious success.
“I expect us to hit the ball really hard. We hit it hard this weekend, so I expect us to be doing it against Charlotte,” Chamberlin said. “We need to keep winning.”
