Editor’s note:
Technician is premiering “Faces of the Brickyard,” a weekly series featuring a randomly selected students from the campus hot spot.
Jennifer Corriher, freshman in agricultural business management, moved most of her possessions from her home in China Grove, North Carolina — population 4,208, according to the town Web site — to her West Campus residence hall room Aug. 18.
Jessie C. Carson High School, where Corriher graduated, had a graduating class of 115.
“[China Grove] is really quiet. It’s just a small rural town — I think there’s like three stoplights. He was from my county,” she added, pointing to a student walking past Williams Hall. “Everybody pretty much knows everybody else.”
The small town feel is reflected not only by the population, but also the town’s crime rate and news coverage.
“Nothing really exciting has happened,” Corriher said. “The only thing that really gets in the news is when somebody’s killed, which is awful, but nothing really happens. So whenever something like a crime happens, it’s really big.”
Although she’s an addition to the student body, this semester is not the first time she’s seen the campus. Over the past few years, Corriher has been involved in agricultural contest such as the Career Development Event, which is hosted by the FFA on the campus.
“I like the campus and people and atmosphere,” she said. “I don’t exactly know what to expect, though.”
Though she said it’s been a big transition moving to a large campus from such a small town, she has been making friends and spending time with old friends in the days leading up to classes.
“Me and my friends the past couple nights have been making music videos and stuff. We just turn on music, and we dance ridiculously. You can check it out on Facebook or Myspace,” she said.
Corriher said she chose State — and her major — for different reasons. She added that she has plans for both her college and post-college years.
“I want to join STAT, collegiate FFA, which I’ll probably look into,” Corriher said. “I figure that with [agricultural business management] I can do a lot of different things — it had a broad career aspect to it. I want to start off managing a business and some day own my own business.”
But volunteer work is another of her passions. During her freshman year in high school, Corriher went on her church’s mission trips to northern states, but her most memorable trip was to Honduras.
“That was really cool. We went to a small town and had to do a lot of demolition, and we started repairing stuff to make it a physician’s office,” Corriher said. “There were about eight or 10 kids that went, and we got to hang out with the other kids in the town. We didn’t speak Spanish, and they didn’t speak English but it worked somehow, because we all hung out and got along.”
Corriher hopes to get along with her new roommate in the same way.
“[My roommate] is actually my best friend that I’ve known since 6th grade,” Corriher said.
Getting ready for the first day of classes is a task Corriher has been preparing for since she moved in. However, she said she sees a few drawbacks to her full course load.
“I think my biggest problem is going to be with procrastination and time management, but as long as I stay on track, I think it’ll go by really smoothly,” she said.
However, Corriher is not going to allow that aspect of attending college hold her back.
“I’m going to have fun,” Corriher said. “I’m a really outgoing person, and I love meeting new people.”
