George Parrish, a junior in business management, was killed in a car accident near Edenton, N.C. last week.
Parrish died after his car flipped into a water-filled ditch at approximately 2:30 a.m. last Thursday, according to an N.C. Highway Patrol report.
Parrish, 20, was driving eastbound on NC-32 in the direction of his parents’ home in Edenton when he lost control of his 2002 Volvo, the report stated.
According to the report, Parrish overcorrected after crossing the centerline of the highway and ran off the right side of the road. He struck a yield sign before spinning, colliding with a culvert.
The car burst into flames before overturning in a ditch filled with water, according to the report.
The regional medical examiner’s office in Greenville, N.C. performed an autopsy and determined the cause of death to be “drowning due to motor vehicle accident.”
The report stated that Parrish was traveling 70 mph in a 55-mph zone when he lost control of his vehicle.
According to 1st Sgt. C.D. Gould, of the Highway Patrol, Parrish’s body will be tested for the presence of drugs and alcohol.
“Any time there’s a fatal automobile accident, the body is tested for drugs and alcohol,” Gould said.
He said it may take several weeks for the results to come back.
Parrish’s funeral was held Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Edenton. A reception followed at Chero’s Market Café, where Parrish worked during the summer.
