Students looking for a way to spread holiday cheer have the opportunity to help the less fortunate this week.
Volunteer LSU and the Office of Public Affairs are sponsoring “The Giving Tree” charity drive starting today and lasting until Dec. 10.
Nancy Little, marketing strategist for Public Affairs, said they are collecting new, unwrapped toys for the Marine Corps “Toys for Tots” drive, new or gently used clothing for the Salvation Army and nonperishable foods for the Greater Baton Rouge Area Food Bank.
“This is a time that we are very reflective, and we’re very thankful for what we have,” Little said. “And if there is an opportunity to spread the LSU and the holiday spirit to others, then that is something we should do.”
Kyle Homan, Volunteer LSU director, said collections may be left in the three large, white boxes at the base of the University’s Christmas tree near Memorial Tower. He said additional drop-off locations are in the Student Union Bookstore and the Volunteer LSU office on the third floor of the Student Union.
Little said the name of the drive – “The Giving Tree” – reflects how the tree connects the campus community through the spirit of giving. She said when the tree is taken down the first week of January, it still helps give back to the University because it is recycled into mulch for oak trees on campus.
Homan said the drive started more than 10 years ago and traditionally begins in conjunction with the Candlelight Celebration. He said he hopes students will remember to bring donations during the busy ending of the semester.
“By donating food, toys and clothing, people that are less fortunate will be able to enjoy the holidays just like everybody else,” Homan said.
