The No. 21 LSU women’s tennis team faced a daunting task tonight in No. 2 Georgia.
Ater jumping out to 1-0 lead following the first match, the Lady Tigers (11-5, 1-3) fell to the Lady Bulldogs (14-2, 4-1) by a score of 4-2.
LSU senior Megan Falcon defeated Georgia junior Yvette Hyndman in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. The Lady Bulldogs went on to win four of the next five matches, including three in a row, to take down the Lady Tigers.
The doubles matches did not take place because of inclement weather.
LSU women’s coach Tony Minnis said his team gave all they could, but Georgia showed why they were the No. 2 team in the country.
“They needed points in key situations and came through in those situations and played very solid,” Minnis said. “I thought we fought extremely hard and gave a good effort, but they were the better team today.”
MEN’S TENNIS FALLS 5-2 TO GEORGIA
The No. 3 Georgia men’s tennis team lived up to expectations Friday night against LSU.
The Bulldogs took care of business, defeating the Tigers, 5-2.
LSU (6-7, 1-4) won the first doubles match of the night but lost the final two, giving Georgia (15-2, 4-1) an early 1-0 lead in the match.
LSU senior Michael Venus defeated No. 10 Nate Schnugg of Georgia in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5).
Venus’ match had LSU men’s coach Jeff Brown saying it felt like an NCAA title match.
Following Venus, things went downhill for the Tigers. LSU lost four of the last five matches on the night.
The Tigers return home for a Sunday matchup with Tennessee.
