Six teams began Monday night hoping to win a soccer intramural title, but only three teams went home with intramural championship T-shirts — Kappa Sigma, Team Gus Gus and Kappa Kappa Gamma.The first game of the night at the Sport and Adventure Complex featured The Hot Seven versus Kappa Sigma for the all campus men’s title.After 40 minutes of regulation, the teams were tied at 1-1, but Kappa Sigma was victorious in penalty kicks, 5-3.Team Gus Gus led the Ligers, 1-0, at halftime in the co-rec championship. Two goals worth two points each by female members of Team Gus Gus extended their lead to 5-0 and led Team Gus Gus to a victory.”Our girls dominated,” said Eric Yohe, second-year graduate student and Team Gus Gus player. “They scored a lot for us.”Team Gus Gus won the 2009 co-rec championship after losing to the Ligers in a shootout last spring. Phi Mu and Kappa Kappa Gamma faced off for the women’s title in the final championship of the night.Kappa had more shots on goal during the game, but Phi Mu’s defense held up, and the match went to overtime as both teams were held scoreless.Kappa won the championship on penalty kicks, 3-1.”We played together as a team and stayed focused,” said Stephanie Stanley, math sophomore and Kappa player. “We played well as the season went on and figured out we were good together.”
