University Housing officials sent Bragaw residents an e-mail Wednesday alerting them that someone stole an RD sign in the South Bragaw parking lot. This is the second time someone has stolen the same sign, which marks a spot reserved for Resident Director Michael Bumbry.Bumbry could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.”Parking and Transportation, as well as University Police, have been notified of these crimes. We are looking for information on what may have happened to the signs and who may have been involved,” the e-mail from Sherlonda Clarke, assistant Housing director, said.Capt. Jon Barnwell of Campus Police said both incidents happened without much time in between each other, but he said Housing alerted Campus Police of both incidents after the one officials reported Friday.”When they reported it the first time, they said that it had been the second time it was taken,” Barnwell said. “It happened relatively quickly.”Barnwell said he doesn’t know the specifics of the first incident but Housing may have replaced the sign the first time without reporting it.Shaun Jernigan, a junior in First Year College, said he didn’t hear about the second incident, but his resident adviser spoke to his suite about the first incident right after spring break.”The RA asked if we knew anything about it,” he said.Barnwell said this is the first time Campus Police has heard of an incident like this happening. “The biggest thing we’ll do is we’ll take a report that [the sign] has been taken, and it’s reported as a theft,” Barnwell said. Campus Police will then carry on an investigation in an attempt to find out who stole the sign as well as make everyone aware of the incident “in case it does show up in someone’s dorm room or discarded somewhere,” Barnwell said.Although Campus Police cannot yet speculate on the cause of the theft, Barnwell said it could be the result of a variety of reasons, not just to intentionally deprive the University of property but out of spite from someone or a want to cause damage to something.Thomas Davis, Bragaw resident and sophomore in economics, agreed the incident seems more like an act of vandalism than anything else, but that parking is a problem for Bragaw residents.”It’s really only on weekends when I come back late at night and the lot is full, but I didn’t think they issue more passes than spots,” Davis said.Davis admitted, however, that people “incapable of parking in lines” also cause some of these parking issues.Parking on late week nights is also a problem, he said, and on some nights, he has to park in West Lot and risk a ticket.Abhishek Pratap, a sophomore in industrial engineering and Bragaw resident, said he doesn’t have a car on campus but agreed parking is an issue. However, Pratap said a collective punishment requiring all residents to pay for the damage is not an effective way to prevent the theft from happening in the future. Residents in Becton Hall faced a similar situation last month because of vandalism officials found in one of the bathrooms.
