LSU senior Michael Venus had two tennis matches to play Thursday — one singles against San Diego State’s Dean Jackson and one doubles match with freshman Neal Skupski against Sacramento State’s pair of Kiryl Harbatsiuk and Anton Stryhas. But after a disappointing day, Venus will have Friday free.Jackson knocked Venus out of the singles competition in two sets, 7-6, 6-3, early Thursday afternoon. And later in the day, Harbatsiuk and Stryhas sent the Tiger tandem packing.”It was just one of those days where nothing goes your way,” LSU coach Jeff Brown said in a news release. “We didn’t play that well, but we weren’t able to take advantage of the opportunities that we had to gain momentum. It was an unfortunate ending to a great year for those guys.” Venus and Skupski got ahead, 4-1, early in the first set, but could not hold on.The Sacramento State team fought back to force a tie-breaker and eventually win the set.The second set also ended in a tie-breaker and another Sacramento State win, and Harbatsiuk and Stryhas pushed through, 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (7-4).The loss marked the end of a decorated career at LSU for Venus.”Michael has been a great contributor and we wish him well in his career,” Brown said. “We are excited to get Neal back and for him to step up into a leadership role. We are already building and preparing for next year.”—-Contact Jerit Roser at [email protected]
