The oil used to power the motor of the elevator in Pleasant Hall overheated Friday night, causing oil to leak into the basement and smoke to fill the building, according to Clay Cooper, Baton Rouge Fire Department Incident Safety Officer and fireman on the scene.Five fire trucks along with about 15 firemen and several LSUPD officers arrived at about 9 p.m. to find smoke throughout the building, which Cooper said traveled to the third floor via the elevator shaft. Cooper said the cause of the overheating is yet to be determined, but a motor malfunction could be responsible. Other than the oil lining the floor of the basement, the building did not sustain any damages.—–Contact The Daily Reveille news staff at [email protected]
