It was one and done for the No. 20 LSU softball team in the Southeastern Conference tournament.
LSU (32-16-1) fell to Tennessee (38-15-1), 6-5, in the first round of the tournament Thursday, the third time they’ve lost to the Volunteers this season. The Tigers also tied Tennessee in the third game of their series back on April 5.
Tennessee freshman pitcher Cat Hosfield picked up her third win against LSU this season. She pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up five hits while striking out six batters.
LSU had two pitchers split time in the circle Thursday. Junior Kirsten Shortridge pitched three scoreless innings and gave up two hits, and junior Cody Trahan pitched four innings while giving up all six runs to Tennessee.
Junior outfielder Rachel Mitchell led LSU offensively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. LSU freshman first baseman Anissa Young wasn’t far behind with a 2-for-3, two-RBI performance.
LSU had a chance in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and two outs after freshman Ashley Langoni walked. But sophomore Casey Faile, who pinch hit for freshman catcher Morgan Russell, grounded out to second base to end the game.
