The LSU track and field teams combined for 23 automatic bids to the NCAA Outdoor Championships this weekend. The Lady Tigers and Tigers finished No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, at the Mideast Regional Championships. The women posted 85.5 points to win the regional for the fourth consecutive year — this time around, leaving the Tennessee Lady Volunteers in second place with 69 points. The LSU men scored 83 points of their own to finish second to Arkansas’ 90.”I thought that both of our teams competed about as well as they could today,” LSU coach Dennis Shaver said in a news release. “We had quite a few athletes who knew that if they did not finish in the top five of their event today that they would not be going to the NCAA meet … The bottom line is that if you’re not at the meet, then you’re not going to be able to score for us.”Five individuals and three relay teams headlined the 23 championship qualifiers for LSU.Freshman Barrett Nugent took home the men’s 110-meter hurdles championship with a personal best time of 13.66 seconds — the sixth fastest in LSU history and fastest time in the NCAA this season.”I didn’t want to come in just to place,” Nugent said in a news release. “I wanted to come in strong to nationals … I got out pretty slow, but I recovered pretty quickly.”Senior Trindon Holliday won his second career Mideast Regional title in the 100-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 10.03, and sophomore Walter Henning won the hammer throw title with a throw of 231 feet, 6 inches — beating the NCAA leader, Missouri All-American Chris Rohr by more than 7 feet.Holliday also anchored the Tigers’ team of Armanti Hayes, Will Coppage and Gabriel Mvumvure that won the 4×100-meter relay.Junior All-American Samantha Henry also won two titles for the Lady Tigers, taking hom the 200-meter dash and running the third leg of the women’s 4×100-meter relay team of Monique Cabral, Cassandra Tate and Kenyanna Wilson that won the title.Henry also finished second to Wilson in the 100-meter dash, as Wilson added another individual championship to LSU’s weekend.Tate, Brittany Hall, Kayann Thompson and LaTavia Thomas added the 4×400-meter relay title to round out LSU’s event championships.”Those are just a few of many outstanding performances we saw today from our athletes,” Shaver said. “The goal for each one of our athletes coming into this meet is to finish in the top five of an event to qualify automatically for the NCAA championships, but it’s great to see them raise their level of performance and go out and win an event.”Other automatic qualifiers for the men include Mvumvure in the 200 meters and Hayes and Robert Simmons in the 400 meters. Jamaal Jones and Richard Jones both qualified in the 800 meters, while Patrick Lee earned a spot in the 400 hurdles and Rabun Fox made the cut in the hammer throw.Cabral and Kristina Davis qualified for the Lady Tigers in the 100 meters, while Hall and Thomas both earned spots in the 800 meters. And Brittani Carter, Melissa Ogbourne and Anna Lyons made the cut in the high jump, triple jump and javelin, respectively.Other LSU athletes could still earn at-large bids to the NCAA meet. At-large bids are scheduled to be announced Tuesday. The meet will begin June 10 in Fayetteville, Ark., and run through June 13.—-Contact The Daily Reveille sports staff at [email protected]
