The LSU baseball team is projected to win the 2009 Southeastern Conference championship, according to the preseason SEC coaches poll released Monday morning.
LSU received 10 of a possible 11 votes for the overall SEC champion. Georgia and Ole Miss of the SEC East each received one vote.
Ten pitchers and 14 position players return to the Tigers lineup this season as they try to defend their SEC title and make a second straight appearance at the NCAA College World Series.
Junior outfielder Blake Dean and junior second baseman Ryan Schimpf were also named to Rivals.com’s preseason All-America team on Monday.
Dean, the 2008 SEC tournament Most Valuable Player, hit 20 home runs and 73 RBI with a .353 average last season. Schimpf led the SEC in triples in 2008 with seven while hitting .320
LSU’s season gets underway Friday against Villanova at Alex Box Stadium.
