Senior long jumper Jeremy Hicks set the nation’s fourth-best long jump this season at the LSU Twilight on Friday at Carl Maddox Field House with a 25-foot, 8 3/4-inch jump.
Hicks entered the meet No. 12 nationally in the event. His jump Friday set a personal best and moved him up to seventh all-time in school history in the event.
LSU will have two long jumpers at the NCAA Indoor Championships on . Junior Will Coppage jumped 25 feet, 7 1/4 inches en route to winning the event at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 6.
“I really thought I was going to come in here and jump 26 feet today,” Hicks said in a news release. “I think I’ve got that in me. I need to continue to work on my technique, and I’ll be ready for the postseason.” Freshman Michael Lauro won the weight throw with a toss of 66 feet, 5 3/4 inches. Sophomore Walter Henning, who set a school record in the weight throw in the Tigers’ first meet this season, did not compete Friday.
The LSU Twilight is the team’s final meet before the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 28. The NCAA Indoor Championships take place March 13 and 14.
