NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana’s congressional delegation is asking President Obama to extend by at least two years the federal office of Gulf Coast Rebuilding.
The office, which President Bush established by executive order after hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, is set to expire at month’s end. The federal coordinator, who left his post with Bush last month, had previously suggested continuing the work of the office into 2011.
Delegation members, in a letter dated Monday, said having a continued coordinating effort in the White House, focused solely on seeing through the rebuilding effort in the region, is critical.
They also asked that Obama “strengthen and refocus” the office’s role and authority to help it better coordinate efforts between federal agencies.
