After a ninth place finish after Day 1, the LSU men’s golf team wrapped up the final round at the SunTrust Gator Invitational tied for sixth place out of 14 teams. It was the second year in a row the Tigers finished tied for sixth at the tournament with a freshman finishing with a top 10 individual performance. Last year it was Andrew Loupe shooting a 5-under 205 in a tie for fourth place. This year it was Sang Yi who finished with a top ten performance, tying for ninth place. Yi led the Tigers, shooting a 3-under par 67 in the first and last rounds of play. Despite a struggle in the second round where he shot a 5-over 75, the freshman finished with a 1-under 209 to notch his second career top 10 performance. Junior Brent Blaum shot a 1-over 71 in each round, finishing tied for 22nd place with a 3-over 213. The two-day, three-round tournament at the Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla., featured No. 14 Florida, No. 20 Tennessee-Chattanooga, No. 24 Central Florida and No. 25 Duke among others. Defending champion and host Florida won the tournament for the 23rd time in its 32-year existence, sweeping the top two spots with four of their five golfers finishing in the top 6. The Gators were the only team to finish under par (16-under 824), beating second place Ole Miss by 18 strokes. Freshman Josh Jones finished his last round with a 2-under 68, finishing in a tie for 55th place at 9-over 219. Loupe finished tied for 26th with a 54-hole score of 5-over 215, and sophomore John Peterson tied for 50th at 8-over 218. The Lady Tigers and the No. 22 golfer in the NCAA, Megan McChrystal, start their spring action today at the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla. The No. 14 Lady Tigers will face No. 8 Duke and No. 10 Auburn and No. 19 Michigan State, the host team, among others. Their last tournament was Oct. 25-26 at The Derby Invitational in Auburn, Ala., where the Lady Tigers finished seventh and McChrystal finished in sixth place. The two-day Central District Invitational tees off at 7 a.m.
