Students trying to get a last-minute date for Valentine’s Day now have an extra option. Match.com recently launched a new dating site DownToEarth.com. The site is free and features a self-policing system known as RealRatings. RealRatings allows members to rate someone’s profile on accuracy after meeting them in person. The site’s general manager Jacob Solotaroff said in a press release that the system helps decrease the misrepresentation common on other dating sites. “Singles are tired of the misrepresentation that takes place on free sites,” Solotaroff said in the release. “DownToEarth.com’s RealRatings system encourages honest and respectful interactions, enabling our daters to create a trustworthy community.”DownToEarth.com is the only free dating site that does not allow married people, according to Kate Hall, spokesperson for the dating service. This makes the site more accessible for college students, she said. “The site has a zero-tolerance policy against lying and lewd behavior, so students can be sure that they’re meeting quality people who are really single,” Hall said in an e-mail to The Daily Reveille. But college students may be less likely to go on dating sites compared to other age groups. Sarah Becker, sociology professor, said students have more options when it comes to finding dates. “Compared to other sorts of populations, students don’t have as much of a need to meet people,” Becker said. “They go to the same social situations in terms of bars and parties.” Because college students have so many options in finding dates, they are less likely to use online sites. “People use online sites because they don’t have communities to meet other people,” Becker said. “College students tend to live in the same areas and interact with each other.” Some students said they would be skeptical about using an online dating site. Lauren Soblosky, chemistry senior, said college-aged students on a dating site seem less approachable. “If you can’t find someone talking to them in person, there might be something wrong with you,” she said. Stu Tully, history graduate student, said college students have many opportunities to meet new people.”It seems like a waste when you can go to the quad or class,” he said. “This is the goldenest opportunity you’ll get to meet new people.”——Contact Ben Bourgeois at [email protected]
