BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The peak of crawfish season is coming up in south Louisiana and crawfish farmers are happy about new state and federal policies designed to make sure people know where there crawfish come from.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is enforcing a new rule thar requires that shellfish and meats be clearly labeled with information that tells the consumer where the product came from.
That’s in addition to a state law passed last year that made it unlawful for a Louisiana restaurant to misrepresent the crawfish or shrimp they serve as Louisiana-raised if it’s not. The author of that law, state Rep. Fred Mills, a Democrat from Parks, said the restaurant customer has a right to know where the crawfish dish they’re buying comes from.
