BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The LSU system says it would have to lay off as many as 650 instructors and 1,250 support employees at its campuses around the state if it is forced to cut more than $175 million in state funding next year.
Athletics programs, student services, student activities centers, library purchases and maintenance also would have to be scaled back, according to a document submitted Wednesday to Gov. Bobby Jindal’s financial analysts.
LSU System President John Lombardi says if those cuts happen, LSU won’t be able to compete with public university systems around the country. The budget cuts are not certain. The governor’s budget advisers sought proposals for possible cuts from various state offices.
