The LSU men’s golf team won the John Hayt Invitational at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., on Tuesday by eight strokes. LSU finished with a team score of 6-over par 294 in the final round and an overall score of 21-over 885 for the tournament. The Tigers held a two-stroke lead against No. 10 Arizona State going into the final day. The Sun Devils finished the tournament in second at 29-over 893. Sophomore John Peterson won the individual title with a 2-under 214. Sophomore Andrew Loupe finished tied for second with an even-par 216. Peterson shot a 2-under 70 on Tuesday, the lowest score in the final round. He was three shots back entering the day. “I thought both John and Andrew were outstanding this week,” LSU coach Chuck Winstead said in a news release. “You look at those two now compared to where they were at this time last year and it’s easy for someone to see how much they’ve improved. They’ve worked very hard to get where they are today. I think what they showed this week was the mental toughness needed to play through adversity and have success.” Peterson is the first LSU male golfer to win an individual title since Beck Troutman at the 2005 LSU Spring Invitational. —- Contact The Daily Reveille’s sports staff at [email protected]
