Gloria Johnson of the LSU gymnastics team was named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for her performance against Alabama, the league announced on Tuesday. The honor is the first of her career. Johnson had her best meet as a Tiger as she posted a career-high 9.825 on beam in the fourth rotation that pushed LSU to its second victory ever at Alabama and first since 1976 as the Tigers defeated the Crimson Tide, 196.625-195.750. The Baton Rouge, La., also tallied a 9.825 on vault, the fifth time this season she has hit that score in the event. Johnson was also integral in helping LSU achieve a 49.025 score on floor – LSU’s second-highest this season – as she delivered a 9.775 in the event. It was only the second time she has competed on floor this season. Johnson’s 9.825 on vault placed her in a tie for fifth in the meet, while she tied for fourth on both beam and floor. LSU (8-2, 3-2 SEC) will play host to Illinois-Chicago and North Carolina in a tri-meet Friday at 7 p.m. in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.—-Contact the Daily Reveille’s sports staff at [email protected]
