BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The state is trying to figure out how many contract employees are working for Louisiana government so the Legislature can get another handle on costs.
The Legislative Auditor’s Office says state agencies have about 16,000 active contracts — at an annual cost of $7 billion. Although there are 61,000 civil service workers and 38,600 subject to at-will firing, the numbers don’t include employees working for contractors.
According to The Advocate of Baton Rouge, the auditor says that reporting the number of contract employees “would allow the Legislature to understand the true number and cost of carrying out state functions.”
The report is being studied by the Commission for Streamlining Government.
