“New Orleans is a city that has always shown America what is possible when we had the imagination to see the unseen and the determination to work for it.” Those were then-candidate Barack Obama’s words at an address at Tulane University in February of last year. Along with the Crescent City, The Daily Reveille hopes today’s presidential visit won’t be used simply as a political photo-op. Serious problems still face New Orleans. Amid the destruction after Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent recession, Mayor Ray Nagin warned recently of a $68 million budget shortfall, leaving city workers vulnerable to potential furloughs. In the meantime, “The Big Easy” now refers to the ease of violent crime across the city, as New Orleans has again become the murder capital of the country. We remember all too well the previous administration’s handling and care for the city of New Orleans. In lieu of a measured and efficient response to a horrible tragedy, we received a presidential speech against the backdrop of Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral — only to have the city plunged back into darkness when President George W. Bush left. Obama has the chance to do something different. Instead of a flyover of the area or a speech about the importance of the city, he should commit himself to fully restoring and invigorating what so many are proud to call home. It’s not enough anymore to “laissez les bons temps rouler.” We hope the president makes the good times roll again for New Orleans.—-Contact the Editorial Board at [email protected]
