Junior Julien Gauthier and freshman Stefan Szcinski both recorded wins Saturday to advance to the finals of the Rice Invitational at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. Gauthier advanced to Sunday’s Flight A finals with a come from behind 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6) three-set victory against Rice’s Isamu Tachibana. Szcinski used a third set tie-break to edge Rice’s Oscar Podlewski, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (13-11) to advance to the Flight B finals. The LSU women’s team had similar success in the Southeastern Conference Fall Classic in Nashville, Tenn, as sophomore Whitney Wolf and freshman Kaitlin Burns notched singles wins. Wolf beat Tennessee’s Rosalia Alda 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 and Kaitlin Burns defeated Auburn’s Plamena Kurteva in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5. The Lady Tigers also recorded two doubles victories as Wolf and freshman Keri Frankenberger beat Auburn’s tandem of Paulina Schippers and Caroline Thorton, 8-2, and Burns and fellow freshman Ebie Wilson beat Mississippi State’s Valeria Makarycheva and Elizabeth Hall, 8-2.
