For a short time LSU football fans expressed their school pride through beer cans.
Anhuesuer-Busch designed beer cans displaying school colors of several college campuses.
However, the company recently stopped the distribution of these new cans.
Just last week Anhuesuer-Busch stopped the distribution of its school spirit beer can product. The reason for the abrupt decision came from numerous school complaints. But the question to ask is, given the chance, would this new beer affect LSU in a major way?
“I think people see it as Budweiser’s branding,” said Lance Porter, advertising professor. “It’s not like they look at that and go, oh, that means LSU is associated with Budweiser.”
Some University professors disagree on the affects the new can designs might have on LSU’s higher education agenda.
“LSU is way high in the party school ranking than it is in the academic ranking,” said anthropology professor, Mary Jo Brody.
“There are many variables in that reputation and I think this is a pretty small part of it,” said Porter.
“I guess you could say mixed but mostly negative,” said Brody
Professor Porter says the beer cans would have affected every college campus the same.
“It’s not like LSU would be the only school in the country who had a beer can named after it, or, or, with school colors. You know they were also doing it at Ohio State,” said Porter. “College sports is now big business. So its simply just the next step in this process.”
“I mean of course the company wants to sell more beer,” said Brody.
“Large companies will tend to cash in on the brand of Universities’,” said Porter.
Ultimately, Brody said the design doesn’t matter.
“People are going to drink beer in no matter what color can,” she said.
Professor Porter thinks using school colors for alcohol products is the future for college sports.
This type of advertisement is already used in the NFL.
