The LSU football team will play North Carolina for its 2010 season opener, the LSU Athletic Department announced Wednesday.
The two teams will play Sept. 4 in the Georgia Dome as a part of the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta. Several media outlets had reported the matchup before today’s formal announcement.
“This is a great opportunity for us to showcase our program on a national scale against a top program from the ACC,” said LSU athletic director Joe Alleva in a news release. “This will be an exciting way to start the season and we think this will be a great experience for our fans. A prime time national telecast means tremendous exposure for our football program and our university.”
LSU’s series against Tulane has also been canceled, according to another news release. The Tulane game was originally supposed to be LSU’s 2010 season opener.
The two teams were originally scheduled to play six more matchups as part of a 10-year deal signed in May 2005.
The Athletic Department also announced LSU will play McNeese State on Oct. 16 in Baton Rouge next season. That date was open until today’s announcement.
Northwestern State has also been scheduled for the 2011 season, according to the news release. That game will be played Sept. 10, 2011 in Baton Rouge.
