Jones County, Iowa (CNN)—A harrowing ordeal is over tonight for a 63 year old Iowa woman.
Jeanne Schnepp survived five days lost in the wilderness with very few supplies.
Now, she and her family are thankful her fishing trip didn’t end in tragedy.
“She put the little raft in the water and got taken downstream,” said Schenpp’s son, Corey. “The current was stronger than she thought, and she got hung up in that snag.”
Jeanne Schnepp’s fishing trip could have ended up in tragedy, her family feared the worst after searching for her for five days.
“She could hear boats going by. She was yelling and waving, but she was in such a big hole that nobody could see her from the water,” said Corey Schenpp.
Larry Williams lives in a cabin on the Wapsipinicon River.
From the river bank, he saw an arm then an oar go up into the air.
“I said where you from?” asked Williams. “She said Hale. I said they’ve been looking for you for three days, what are you doing down there?”
The current pushed the raft around a river bend and into the brush. Williams said when he found her, she was right next a tire.”
Larry says Jeanne heard his dog Hurky barking and that led to the discovery.
“I’m glad I found her,” said Williams.
Jeanne’s son knows what could’ve happened if Williams hadn’t, but now he is breathing a sigh of relief.
“It’s great, compared to the last couple of days,” said Corey.
Jeanne says she survived with two cans of pop and a bottle of water.
And although she’s okay, her family says she won’t be out fishing by herself again anytime soon.
