BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Ten public schools in Baton Rouge and Shreveport will be taken over by the state in July because of their poor performance.
A sharply-divided state education board gave final approval to the takeover Thursday.
The move came against the wishes of local education and community leaders who say they could improve the schools without a state takeover.
Supporters of the takeover say the local school districts had years to make improvements and hadn’t done enough to keep them from failing.
Louisiana Superintendent of Education Paul Pastorek says he hopes the 10 schools — eight in Baton Rouge and two in Shreveport — will become independently run charter schools.
The schools are:
—Linear Middle School in Caddo Parish.
—Linwood Middle School in Caddo Parish.
—Banks Elementary School in East Baton Rouge Parish.
—Capitol Elementary School in East Baton Rouge Parish.
—Capitol Middle School in East Baton Rouge Parish.
—Crestworth Middle School in East Baton Rouge Parish.
—Dalton Elementary School in East Baton Rouge Parish.
—Kenilworth Middle School in East Baton Rouge Parish.
—Lanier Elementary School in East Baton Rouge Parish.
—Park Elementary School in East Baton Rouge Parish.
