Louisiana is going after drunk boaters — particularly underage drinkers.
Wildlife and Fisheries Secretary Robert Barham and Alcohol and Tobacco Control Commissioner Murphy J. Painter say their agents will be out together to try to make people more aware that drunk boating is dangerous.
Officials say drugs or alcohol contributed to 23 percent of the fatal boating accidents over the past four years. They also found that teen-agers made up 10 percent of those deaths.
Painter says that whether you’re on land or water, it’s illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to possess alcohol. He also says retailers accessible by boat must be extra diligent in making sure all their buyers are of legal age.—-Contact The Daily Reveille news staff at [email protected]
