The Miami Heat selected former LSU guard Marcus Thornton at No. 13 in the second round of the 2009 NBA Draft on Thursday. Thornton was the draft’s No. 43 pick overall.The Heat subsequently traded Thornton’s rights to the New Orleans Hornets for two future second-round picks.Thornton won the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year award last season, averaging 21.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Thornton led the Tigers in scoring each of his two seasons at LSU.The New Orleans Hornets also selected former UCLA point guard Darren Collison at No. 21 overall.Collison, a 6-foot-2-inch point guard who spent four seasons with the Bruins, will likely serve as Chris Paul’s back up.The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native averaged 14.4 points, 4.7 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game his senior season and also added 1.6 steals per game on the defensive side of the ball.—-Contact The Daily Reveille sports staff at [email protected]
