The LSU football team received news of its bowl destination Sunday night. The Tigers, who are No. 12 in the BCS standings after a 9-3 season, will travel to Orlando, Fla., for the Capital One Bowl against Penn State on New Year’s Day.”Ten wins is a great threshold,” Miles said. “We take very seriously the idea that the Capital One Bowl championship is at stake.”Miles said the ultimate goal for LSU every season is to have a shot at a national championship.”No matter what we do until we get to the back end and have a chance to play for a national title, it will be incomplete,” Miles said. “It’s not quite what we want. But there is achievement with this football team.”Miles said the Tigers weren’t very far from earning a trip to the SEC championship, which Alabama secured with a 32-13 victory against Florida on Saturday night. “How far away are we from playing in the conference championship? A couple of plays maybe, or a couple of injuries, maybe a great drive,” Miles said. “A football team here is going to measure its seasons on championships, and this year we fell short.”LSU is 4-0 under Miles in bowl games, and he has led the Tigers to a bowl appearance in each of his five seasons as coach.Miles said LSU will have 15 practices before the bowl game.”It’s the length of a spring,” he said. “If you can get another spring in as you prepare for a bowl opponent, it evolves your team.”Miles said senior wide receiver Brandon LaFell will likely be back for the bowl game after leaving the Arkansas game with an injury.”It appears to me LaFell has a nick, nothing that will be long-term with him,” Miles said. “I’m not saying he’s necessarily ready to play today, but I think he’ll be comfortably ready to play at the bowl site.”As far as senior running back Charles Scott, who fractured his collarbone against Alabama and has not played since, Miles left his status up in the air.”Charles Scott is going to be very interesting,” Miles said. “I know he’ll be back. We’ll have him in shells, certainly a piece of the bowl preparation. Whether we’ll actually get him to play, I’m not certain, but we would be so thrilled to have Scott back.”—-Contact Rachel Whittaker at [email protected]
