The Ed Orgeron era has began, with spring practice in full swing.
LSU also opened its first practice under offensive coordinator Matt Canada, who’s tone and personality was on display.
LSU took little time in between reps and drills. Canada’s voice boomed throughout the practice field.
In the short media viewing period of practice, Canada worked closely with the quarterbacks and wide receivers, focusing on fixing certain tendencies.
Senior quarterback Danny Etling received No. 1 reps, after Orgeron said on Thursday that he’s the leader at the position.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Justin McMillan worked took the No. 2 reps, redshirt sophomore Lindsey Scott took third team reps and freshman Lowell Narcisse worked at the No. 4 spot.
Offensive notes
Junior offensive tackle Toby Weathersby was absent in practice after receiving surgery on his right knee earlier in the year. Redshirt freshman Jakori Savage worked in his place.
Will Clapp, who is set to miss most of spring practice, dressed out, but did not participate in drills. The junior offensive lineman is expected to be the Tigers’ starting center in the fall, redshirt freshman Lloyd Cushenberry worked in his spot.
Senior offensive lineman K.J. Malone took reps at left tackle with junior Garrett Brumfield working next to him at left guard. Junior offensive lineman Maea Teuhema took reps at right guard.
Defensive notes
During his spring preview press conference, Orgeron mentioned he wasn’t sure if defensive end Isaiah Washington would practice this spring.
The redshirt sophomore defensive end tore knee ligaments early in last August.
However, in the first spring practice on Saturday, Washington was a full go.
During the practice period open to the media, Washington was seen practicing with a group with redshirt freshman defensive end Andre Anthony and sophomore linebacker Sci Martin.
The trio appear to be taking the spot of Arden Key during the spring.
Saturday’s practice also saw three players shift positions from last year. Senior defensive back Ed Paris practiced with the safeties after spending his first three seasons rotating in at cornerback. Senior linebacker Devin Voorhies practiced with the outside linebackers after spending last season playing inside.
Sophomore Michael Divinity flipped to inside linebacker after seeing snaps at outside linebacker in 2016.
