It has come to an end.
LSU lost 79-52 to Mississippi State in the first round of the SEC Tournament on Wednesday night, and what many have viewed as the worst season in LSU basketball history came to a close.
The Tigers end the 2016-17 season with a 10-21 overall record and 2-17 against SEC opponents after suffering their third loss to the Bulldogs this season.
The Tigers’ record is the worst since 1997, when the Tigers finished 9-18, under then-first year coach John Brady.
LSU didn’t make a single shot in the final 11:35 against Mississippi State, scoring only six points — which came from the free throw line.
The Tigers also finished the game shooting 1-of-22 from three, the worst perimeter shooting performance in SEC Tournament history.
Freshman point guard Skylar Mays led the Tigers in scoring with 13 points and four assists.
Sophomore guard Antonio Blakeney added 11 points and shot 3-of-10 from the field.
Quinndary Weatherspoon and Tyson Carter carried Mississippi State with 19 and 18 points, respectively.
LSU led Mississippi State 25-24 with 5:25 remaining in the first half, but allowed the Bulldogs to close the half on a 13-0 run and was never able to recapture the lead.
Prior to the game, LSU coach Johnny Jones was asked by SEC Network reporter Laura Rutledge about his knowledge of his future with the program.
According to multiple reports, LSU athletic director Joe Alleva planned on firing Jones at the end of the SEC Tournament.
“Nothing, outside of what I’ve read and what I’ve seen on ESPN,” Jones responded. “Our total focus has been about these guys, prepping them and trying to get them ready for an important game for them here in the conference tournament.”
