The LSU women’s basketball team start in the NCAA Tournament came to an abrupt stop, after the Lady Tigers fell against No. 9 seed California on Saturday in the Ferrell Center, 55-52.
“I give Cal their credit,” coach Nikki Fargas said in a press release.“They did what they needed to do. I thought (Asha) Thomas had an unbelievable night from the three-point line and we missed some of our defensive coverages, but the fight we had in us to really get them turned over 20-plus times and get the rebounds against a team that was taller than us.”
The Lady Tigers outscored the Bears in the second and third quarters but were unsuccessful in gaining a victory for LSU.
The Bears grabbed the lead in the first quarter as LSU failed to keep up. The Lady Tigers tied the score at two, but eventually the Bears outscored LSU and ended the first, 18-9.
LSU continued to fight back but again, could not gain a lead in the game. The Lady Tigers went into halftime down, 31-25.
Hyder and Hill lead the team in points with six.
The Lady Tigers tied the game at 39 in the third quarter, but the Bears ended the quarter with a lead.
With 2:54 left in the game, neither team scored until three-pointer by California’s Asha Thomas with 1:22 left in the fourth quarter, gave Baylor the lead.
Sophomore guard Chole Jackson made a basket soon after to close the gap, 53-52. However, with a foul in play, California made two baskets at the charity line to gain a victory against the Lady Tigers and move up in the tournament to play No. 1 seed Baylor.
“I commend our team for having the heart and the fight,” Fargas said. “It’s been a journey for us, but this group has been pretty special.”
