Barcadia Bar Restaurant Arcade, a popular Highland Road bar, is well known for its delicious cuisine, beer and arcade games. Recently, however, Barcadia created a “beer garden.”
Originally coined in Germany, this term has not fully made its way to the United States, but both the idea and name are trending. In Germany, a beer garden is known as “Biergarten.”
These gardens were named because breweries planted gardens throughout their cellars to keep beer cool during its fermentation process.
A beer garden is an outside area that is usually attached to a bar or tavern where beer and food are served.
“In my opinion, it requires three key concepts to be considered a ‘beer garden’: lights, landscape and community tables,” said general manager Greg Muscat.
The beer garden addition has already been well-received by customers, but Muscat said he hopes the beer garden can bring in an even larger crowd.
“We plan on doing live music on Friday nights,” Muscat said. “It’s going to be a huge draw on game days as well. I think once people know about the beer garden at Barcadia, it could spark a huge following.”
Though the beer garden takes up a lot of space and the bar had to sacrifice the front parking lot to make room for more tables, Muscat said he thinks the decision to add one was worth it.
“We have to stay ahead of the competition,” he said. “There are only a couple of places in town with a space like this, and there is nothing like this close to campus. With business increasing, we had to find more seats for people.”
Barcadia was already a hotspot for students with its food, craft beers and “nostalgic 80’s arcade games,” but the beer garden has pushed it over the top.
They also recently added pizza to the menu, and patrons are huge fans of the daiquiri bar and happy hour specials. Barcadia is open each day from 11 a.m.- til. They have daily specials including Greek Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, College Thursdays and Sunday Funday.
“We feel like there is something here for everybody, [and] with the recent addition of the beer garden, there is one more reason to visit Barcadia,” Muscat said.
