The No. 12 LSU softball team fell to No. 2 Auburn, 5-4 in the final game of its first Southeastern Conference series, which clinched the series for Auburn.
After going back and forth most of the game, LSU (19-6, 1-2 SEC) took the lead in seventh inning to put them ahead.
Auburn took an early 2-0 lead, but LSU came back in the fifth only to fall behind again in the bottom of that inning.
Sophomore shortstop Amber Serrett led the team offensively going 3-for-3 at the plate.
“We had huge day out of Amber Serrett, but throughout the lineup everyone contributed,” coach Beth Torina said in a press release. “I can’t think of a point where there wasn’t somebody that didn’t help in some way, shape or form.”
Junior pitcher Allie Walljasper started in the circle and allowed three runs on five hits throughout 4 1/3 innings.
Coming on in relief, junior pitcher Carley Hoover allowed two runs and would suffer the loss.
On Friday, the Tigers dropped the Southeastern Conference series opener against Auburn 5-4. LSU held two leads during the contest, but wasn’t able to hold on.
An error in the bottom of the fifth allowed a runner to score in which the home team took its second lead and finished the game.
LSU took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Auburn came back in the third.
“It’s a typical SEC game with multiple lead changes,” Torina said on Friday. “It’s a battle, a non-stop battle and you have to have an answer any time somebody does something. Auburn did that well and I think we did that well too.”
Senior catcher Sahvanna Jaquish went 1-for-2 at the plate and notched two RBIs. Freshman first baseman Sydney Springfield hit her fifth home run of the season.
In the first game of a double-header on Sunday, LSU defeated Auburn in six innings, 8-0.
Jaquish set the program’s career RBI record and notched her 30th of the season.
Hoover didn’t allow any runs earning her third shutout of the season. She also struck out six batters on 93 pitches.
Senior outfielder Bailey Landry went 3-for-4 at the plate helping lift the Tigers to a victory.
“Luckily for us, we’re not playing for the conference championship this weekend,” Torina said on Saturday. “Of course we want to win the SEC Championship, but we showed that we can fight, hit and do everything it takes to be one of the best in the league.”
