Last Saturday on April Fool’s Day, I stepped inside a musical time machine. Allah-Las performed at One Eyed Jack’s with The Babe Rainbow opening. Although Allah-Las headlined the bill, The Babe Rainbow stole the show.
The Babe Rainbow mostly played tunes from upcoming albums — new songs for any fan of the group. The band has only released one four-track EP, which left many begging for more.
The Babe Rainbow is the best ‘60s psych revival band around right now. Seeing the band live is exactly what you’d expect — people dancing on the stage and in the crowd as if they were at a flower power gathering.
The Babes were able to seamlessly transform very mellow songs into nasty grooves. Typically the musicians ended each track with a bit of a funky jam. My favorite original of the night was “Planet Junior.” The song sounds like it was made to accompany a slow motion surf montage from the 1970s.
The Babe Rainbow extended the last half of “Planet Junior” into a sugary nugget of psych funk. You better believe I was getting down and dirty.
Other notable originals included “Evolution 1964” and “Love Forever.” The band ended its set with a funky cover of “O Caminho Do Bem,” my favorite song by Tim Maia.
After the show, I was able to chat with The Babe Rainbow over some drinks. We talked about farming, surfing, self-sustainability, and creativity. Jack, one of the guitarists, talked to me for 10 minutes about why the sweet potato is the best vegetable in the universe. The Babes said most of their inspiration comes from working on a farm, swallowing salt water while surfing, and being high on life in general.
The group has already recorded three albums currently awaiting release. Angus, frontman of the group, said the first one is pretty good, but the second is really, really good. He compared the third album to coming out of an acid trip. It would be an understatement to say I can’t wait to hear these new albums in the coming months.
The dudes from The Babe Rainbow are definitely far out fellas, and I will definitely see them again some day.
