Chicago four-piece NE-HI delivered a refreshing dose of indie rock to The Spanish Moon on Friday, May 5.
The show marked NE-HI’s first trip to Baton Rouge, but hopefully not the last. The group played songs from their new sophomore LP “Offers,” shining on standout tracks like “Out of Reach” and “Prove.”
Lead vocalist and guitarist Jason Alla sang fervently, often backed by guitarist Mikey Wells. Both musicians were obviously passionate, although their separate musical sensibilities came through on stage. Wells bounced with the energy of Dee Dee Ramone, while Alla danced fluidly, as if the sound of his guitar controlled his every move.
The group’s bassist, James Weir, stood center stage between the two guitarists. Behind him, Alex Otake kept things moving on the drums.
NE-HI describes its sound as a blend of ’80s college rock and ’60s psychedelia. Members also look to post-punk and alternative groups like Joy Division, Wire, and Echo & The Bunnymen for inspiration.
Post-punk influences are best heard in Alla’s guitar riffs, which left just enough room for Weir’s bass to shine through. Alla’s vocals also brought to mind the semi-careless style of ’80s alternative bands like The Replacements.
NE-HI has undoubtable chemistry on stage. Together the group put on a show that deserved a sold-out crowd (but didn’t get one).
“Offers” is an interesting listen teeming with fresh, creative songwriting. Played live, the music speaks for itself. It’s guitar-driven, alternative rock ‘n’ roll that proves Chicago DIY bands are not to be ignored.
