The No. 2 LSU gymnastics team landed at No. 2 in the first edition of the Regional Qualifying Score being released.
The Tigers’ RQS score was released Monday totaling a score of 197.655, respectively.
A team’s RQS is determined by taking its top-six meet scores.Three of the six scores must be from road or neutral meets. From there, the scores are averaged and the highest score is not averaged.
“I’m not a huge fan,” said coach D-D Breaux. “I think the whole season should count. If sickness overcomes your team and you can’t put a team out on the floor, there should be a mulligan rule where you can send in a doctor’s report and you don’t have to count that score.”
Breaux noted she thought there should be some exceptions to the rule.
“There’s got to be an exception to that rule,” Breaux said. “I think your highest score and your lowest score should carry the same weight in your qualifications and ranking to the National Championship. I think everything should count.”
The scores that are factored into LSU’s RQS are from the Tigers’ 197.700 at Arkansas, 197.700 at GymQuarters Mardi Gras Invitational, 197.575 at Alabama, 197.825 vs. Alabama and 197.450 vs. Texas Woman’s.
The Tigers’ season-high score of 197.975 was not averaged into the 197.655 RQS.
“It’s basically based on how your scores work out throughout the whole year,” said senior all-around Ashleigh Gnat. “It’s not really something that we’re looking too hard at. I wish the high score would count, but it’s nice that the low score doesn’t count.”
“I think that we’ve shown a lot of consistency as a whole group,” Gnat said. “Sometimes when we know we haven’t done our best we still come close to our highest score and that’s so important. I think it shows how further we can go.”
The Tigers will face No. 14 Auburn in Auburn Arena Friday night. The meet will close out LSU’s three meet stretch in eight days.
