LSU’s first victory of the season didn’t take long to earn.
The No. 4 LSU softball team defeated Oklahoma State 14-2 in five innings.
LSU led early with four runs in the first inning and erupted for seven runs in the second inning.
Junior pitcher Allie Walljasper started the contest for the Tigers, throwing 94 pitches in four and a half innings of work, tallying five strikeouts against the Cowgirls.
Notable starters for the Tigers included freshman Amanda Doyle at first base and Elyse Thornhill at left outfield.
Thornhill went 2-for-4 and notched three RBIs.
Doyle scored twice in her first game with the Tigers. Junior outfielder Emily Griggs and senior outfielder Bailey Landry both went 3-for-3 at the plate.
A two-RBI double from senior catcher Sahvanna Jaquish put LSU in the lead first. Thornhill then returned the favor with a single that would allow Jaquish to run it home.
The Cowgirls pitching staff struggled with the Tigers slappers. Oklahoma State changed pitchers twice in the second inning after allowing a total of 14 hits.
Cowgirls’ starting pitcher Shea Coats allowed six runs until being replaced by Logan Simunek in the second inning. Simunek was then replaced by Barbie Biggerstaff after allowing five runs from the Tigers.
Second basemen Masdi Sue Montgomery scored in the second for Oklahoma State to put them on the board.
In the bottom of the second inning, Griggs scored on a throwing error made by the Cowgirls’ catcher after stealing third base.
The runs kept coming in the second for the Tigers. Thornhill and Doyle later scored on a single from Quinn.
An illegal pitch made by Oklahoma State’s Biggerstaff allowed sophomore third baseman Shemiah Sanchez to score which put the Tigers up 11-1 to end the second.
Sanchez, sophomore shortstop Amber Serrett and senior second baseman Constance Quinn all scored in the third, putting the Tigers ahead by 13 runs.
Cowgirls’ center fielder Maddi Holocomb later scored in the fourth giving Oklahoma State its second and final run of the game.
