After a devastating 24-21 loss to Troy Saturday night, the Tigers used the next 48 hours to reflect on the poor performance.
With seven straight SEC games in front of the team, the time for finding answers has come. Sophomore linebacker Devin White and senior defensive end Christian LaCouture said the team held a players only meeting on Saturday night after the loss.
The focus was to put all the negative feelings out in the open and come together as a unit.
White said the tone of the meeting was positive and that it gave the leaders of the team a chance to vent their frustrations.
“It was basically about who can step up as a leader,” White said. “John Battle was doing a lot of talking and he had a lot on his chest because he’s a senior.”
Many fans were left disappointed by the Tigers effort on Saturday and some started a GoFundMe page to buy out coach Ed Orgeron’s contract.
Lacouture said fans that are calling for Orgeron’s job were being disrespectful and the blame for the loss is not on one man but the entire team.
“We didn’t execute,” LaCouture said. “He had a great gameplan for us this week and when people say stuff like that it really hurts us as a team.”
The fifth year senior totaled 12 tackles and two sacks in the loss while White finished with 11 tackles including a tackle for a loss. LaCouture noticed from watching the game tape the Trojans really attacked LSU on third and fourth downs.
“They ran a lot of screen plays,” LaCouture said. “They were 10-of-18 on third down and that’s something we don’t like. We have to get off the field and give the ball back to our offense.”
In last year’s matchup, the Gators ran for 126 yards against the Tigers defense. LSU might be getting sophomore defensive end Rashard Lawrence and sophomore nose tackle Ed Alexander back this weekend to help with depth along the defensive line.
White said the addition of those two in the lineup gives the Tigers more substitution options against the SEC foe.
“It allows guys to be fresh,” White said. “It starts with the guys up front on the offensive and defensive line and I know the inside linebackers will play well feeding off those guys.”
