Two Door Cinema Club (TDCC) began their second U.S. tour in September with New Orleans as their fourth stop. The band is known for their indie-rock and indie-pop sounds, and certainly lived up to their reputation on Monday, September 18 at the Joy Theater.
Circa Waves opened the event with songs off of their debut album, Young Chasers. Since forming their band in 2013 in Liverpool, it was their first time visiting New Orleans. This meant they had to ask their audience the proper way to pronounce the city’s name. Fun and games aside, they killed their performance with their skill and charisma. They began with, Wake Up, and riled up the crowd. The drummer span his sticks in the air during every song and occasionally would stand up on top of his set to pump up the crowd. In between songs, the band drank their waters and beers but always had playful banter. It was nice to see the two guitarists teasing each other on stage, as well as playing their guitars face to face. They ended with T-Shirt Weather, and left with a bang.
Once they had exited the stage, the crew began an elaborate process of creating TDCC’s set. Honestly, I was surprised that this was happening. The venue was a GA pit with balcony seating, so I was used to the standard lighting like the kind Circa Waves was using. Large panels of lights and strobes were brought out to create a new feel. In the meantime, my brother and I listening to their intermission playlist with songs like, Darude Sandstorm and What is Love. But then it was time, time for Two Door Cinema Club.
After a well anticipated wait, TDCC took the stage. We were in the front row with other screaming fans completely ready. They started off with songs from their debut album, with Cigarettes in the Theatre and Undercover Martyn. At this point, I had official lost my mind. These were the songs that I had listened to on repeat in high school. The light show behind them was blinding. They used the combination of light and fog to create a hazy look. Before I made it to the show, I was worried that they were only going to play off of their most recent album, Gameshow. It’s a fantastic album, but I wanted hear their complicated guitar riffs from previous albums too. Little did I know, I was in for a treat. Throughout the entire show, TDCC played music off of all three of their albums. WOAH. They put on a phenomenal show of their works. They had played twenty of their songs in total and ended with their most popular track, What You Know.
After the show ended, Alex, Sam, and Kevin talked to fans outside of their tour bus. I was able to get autographs and talk to them about touring. I had asked their touring drummer, Benjamin Thompson, about the fans and he had agreed that it was a great confidence boost. All of the members were sweet and friendly to their followers. If anyone gets the chance to see this band, it’s such an experience to be at a Two Door Cinema Club show.
And of course to end such a sweet night, we enjoyed cake with the band.
