Underclassmen bring offense in season debut
A number of LSU’s underclassmen contributed towards a 5-0 shutout in its season opener against the Mississippi Valley Delta Devils. Freshmen Tinaya Alexander, Dana Reed, and Lucy Parker were responsible for four of the Tigers’ five goals with Alexander notching two. Senior Zoe Higgins nailed in the fifth goal, and said that the freshman talent was something the team really needed.
The Tigers showed an impressive amount of offensive pressure putting 12 shots on goal out of 24 attempts. The offensive assault was brought on by the defense’s ability to quickly stop Mississippi Valley’s possessions.
The Tiger defense only allowed three shots throughout the game. Coach Brian Lee emphasized the importance of the youth growing under the leadership of the seniors, and so far the unit looks very cohesive.
Season Opener Shutout ‘Just the Start’ for Tigers
After a disappointing year, the Tigers started on the right foot by easily running through, around, and over Mississippi Valley.
“I see us making big strides,” said Higgins. “This was just the start for us and I think that starting SEC play we’re going to be strong and ready to go and fight for a championship.”
Coach Lee is focusing on having the team getting comfortable with each other as they play and grow moving forward. The Tigers face Colgate on Sunday in Hamilton, New York, and hope to capitalize on a great start moving forward.
