Upscale fashion and the growing world of body art will meet at the Rock Your Body Art Show on Saturday night at 600 Main downtown. The show will feature models showing off body art from local tattoo artists at Atomic Tattoo on Perkins Road and Effum Bodyworks. While tattoos have traditionally been a subversive part of American culture, the stigma is beginning to loosen from the art of tattoos, said 600 Main owner and Rock Your Body show director Jeremy Meighan.
“Tattoos are a definite trend,” Meighan said. “People from all different walks of life are now getting body art because it is an extension of themselves on their body.”
The show’s runway will be adorned with tire rims courtesy of sponsor Kingspin Autosports to give the show an urban feel.
Unlike a normal fashion show, the focus will be on the models’ hairstyles — courtesy of local salons, Salon Jolie and A. Marcelite Salon — and unique body art.
“This event is a way to show people that you can get nice, classy tattoos and sport new, innovative hairstyles and look great,” said Atomic Tattoo artist Robby McKey.
Rock Your Body is also being billed as “Inked Baton Rouge Style,” since the body art created in popular local shops, Atomic Tattoo on Perkins and Effum Bodyworks, will be displayed on the runway. Meighan noted that Baton Rouge does not have an event like this, calling Rock Your Body a “singular” show.”We’ve created something that no one else is doing out there in Baton Rouge,” Meighan said. “Having a DJ, showing tattoos as the main art draw and holding it in an established fashion location like 600 Main is going to make the show a really edgy one.”McKey said people often choose tattoos because they are a way to make a work of art that means something to the person into a concrete part of the person.”Your skin is a canvas, and a tattoo becomes a living, breathing piece of art,” McKey said.Local personalities and co-managers of the Rock Your Body event Aa’Ron Johnson and Whitney Doiron will host the show, and it will begin at 9 p.m. Free champagne will be available from 9 to 10 p.m. Cover is $10 at the door, and it is an 18+ event for women and 21+ for men.
