Former Student Government President and LSU track and field alumnus Kirt Bennett died Monday after suffering a stroke, the LSU Athletic Department announced Tuesday. He was 42 years old.
Bennett was the second African American SG president in LSU history in 1990-91. He competed in the shot put, weight throw and hammer throw for the Tigers from 1986-88.
Bennett graduated from LSU in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and also obtained a master’s degree in public administration from Southern University.
Bennett served as a delegate for Louisiana at the Republican National Convention in 2004, and Gov. Bobby Jindal appointed him to the Greater Baton Rouge Port Commission in 2008.
