(AP) — Louisiana’s voter turnout exceeded the most optimistic of expectations from state elections officials.
Forty-three percent of those registered headed to the polls, well above the 35 percent prediction from the Secretary of State’s Office. Nearly 1.3 million of the state’s 2.9 million voters cast ballots on Tuesday.
In a breakdown by congressional district, the largest turnout was in the Baton Rouge-based 6th District, at 47 percent. Next was the 1st District, where 45 percent of voters in the suburban New Orleans-based district showed up to the polls.
Lowest turnout was in the New Orleans-based 2nd District, despite a hotly contested battle for the congressional seat. Republican incumbent Joseph Cao was ousted by Democrat Cedric Richmond. Turnout there hit only 36 percent.
