The LSU football team starts week six of the college football season right where it finished week five in the AP poll.
The Tigers (5-0, 3-0) held on to their No. 12 ranking in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 poll, released Sunday, after scraping past unranked Tennessee on Saturday. The Tigers vaulted to No. 9 in the coaches’ poll, one spot up from last week.
LSU needed an extra play to defeat the Volunteers, 16-14, after a chaotic final minute saw Tennessee win the game on a fumbled snap, only to have the result reversed after a penalty for too many men on the field.
Oregon jumped to No. 3 in the poll behind Alabama and Ohio State after a 52-31 trouncing of Stanford. Boise State, who had been No. 3 since the preseason, fell to No. 4.
Texas and Southern California — two of the most dominant programs of the past decade — slipped out of the polls after losses to Oklahoma and Washington, respectively.
The last time Texas had been unranked before Saturday’s 28-20 loss to the Sooners was Oct. 15, 2000.
